Affiliate marketing is a system wherein web merchants or advertisers wish to promote their businesses by getting associates who will make sure that they drive traffic to a particular merchant’s website. The associate then earns commissions for every visitor, customer, subscriber or sale that he or she generates for that merchant. Associates basically apply the same methods to advertise the products or services of their merchant partners — email marketing, search engine marketing, search engine optimization, article writing, putting text links or banner advertising — and probably the only difference is the way they apply these techniques and how consistently they do such tactics.
Affiliate marketing is now common among online merchants especially since it is, in the long run, a two-way success street. Since the merchant acknowledges how vast the Internet is and how numerous his competitors are (by the millions, actually), he needs some help in order to increase sales. He knows that there are people out there who want to earn money and they can be his “virtual hawkers” or “marketing partners”. The merchant knows that associates can be effective sellers since they can maintain a relationship with the client (hence, they can cultivate a better, more personal business transaction). Besides, associates only get paid when a sale is closed or a potential lead is referred so it eradicates the employer-employee relationship. Another benefit for the merchant is added exposure of his company or products. Instead of relying only on his own website, his company can now be seen in many other websites through text links, mentions in articles, banner ads and testimonials.
On the other hand, associates are attracted to affiliate marketing because apart from the fact that it can be a useful source of main or extra income, the possibilities are endless and you can even get to work from home. It is a 24/7 business that can even run while one is asleep. All an associate needs is his computer, Internet connection, the zest to earn and learn and he’s good to go. There are a lot of products or services to choose from so associates can select which ones they know they can easily sell or refer people to. The business can be the associate’s very own and its success or failure really depends on the associate. The more the associate devotes time to learning the business and applying the various marketing concepts, the more the business succeeds. There are a lot of programs out there with verifiable payouts and offers of high commissions and the associate just really needs to invest time and effort. However, if the associate does not do anything and thinks that putting up a website with a lot of banners is enough, then the more the business would fail.
Affiliate marketing has truly made it easier for people to make money online. Would-be associates should still be cautious, though, as there are many affiliate programs that turn out to be scams. Nonetheless, successful marketers would still encourage others to join and at least test the waters. Who knows, you may soon be that affiliate superstar.
